Oh my goodness you guys. I seriously feel so old right now. Did you know that the Tamagotchi toys are celebrating their 20th year?!
I remember when the first digital pets came out. I was in middle school. I had an off brand one that was a bat, I named it Nacho. I also had nano pets, giga pets, some little girl one, and of course the original Tamagotchi. Okay, I had one of more than each. So I was excited to see that there was a mini version to celebrate the 20th anniversary!
Kat has three pretty fancy Japanese Tamagotchi (where all the text is in Japanese) and they have these little gems you can add to them to give them special items and all that fun stuff.
These mini ones are simple versions of the original Tamagotchi that we know and love. Did you know they started in Japan in 1996, and came here in 1997? It wasn’t a full year of a difference though. They were a super huge toy fad in the 90’s and early 00’s. They offer 6 characters from the original device, they’re simple to use (feed, clean up after it, and take care of it) and you can turn the sounds on and off. Which wasn’t always possible with some of the little guys back in the day!
I got both a mini-blue translucent and a mini-white opaque Tamagotchi. I am going to give Kat one for Christmas, and the other I am keeping for myself/Risi. I think adding it to my purse or something will make a great distraction for her while we’re doing boring long grocery shopping trips. 😉 Plus, oh man.. total nostalgia bomb!

My kids had these when they first came out. Hard to believe it has been that long.
My sister and brother had them when they were younger, but I had already aged out by the time they first came out. I would love to get a couple for my kids.
I did have one when I was younger. I killed it and I think at the time, you couldn’t re-start. I started out great, but then life got in the way and oops…
I did buy one for my daughter for Christmas! I saw it in the store and had to get it.
I remember my kids having them when they were young. They had a blast with them. I need to get some for my grandkids.
I did not have any of these toys when I was younger (totally aging myself here). But I did get my niece one for Christmas when she was quite young and I remember she loved it at first and then she was crying because she couldn’t get it to go to sleep!
I forgot about these. I was in my 20’s when the craze hit here so I never actually had my own.
I taught first grade when they came out. My students had them and they would beep al the time.
Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since they came out! I remember asking Santa for one as a kid!

Oh wow, 20 years of Tamagotchi. My kids had them when they were fairly new. They were so popular!
We did have tomagotchi back then and I feel old now since they are on their 20th year. It was fun having one back then.

I am kind of thrilled these are back! I had a tamagotchi in elementary school and loved it! My daughter is going to have such a blast with this!
I had this toy when I was a little girl….I had no idea that it was popular again. I just love how everything goes in cycles and that my kids can enjoy the same toys I enjoyed as a kid!
Ha! If your old, I’m old. I remember these too. I can’t believe how far digital pet games have come. My daughter swears by Talking Tom now.
Wow, this is so cool! Very nostalgic. hahaha! I used to have three tamagochis before and going crazy about taking care of it. Indeed time flies so fast!
Awww, Tamagotchi! I remember we had several when we were kids! They were a lot of fun! My daughter doesn’t know what Tamagotchi is but I think I might get her one for Christmas.
